Dashtaki Law Firm Obtains $2 Million Verdict for Wrongfully Terminated State Employee

JEFFERSON CITY — After deliberating all night, a Cole County jury entered a $2.02 million verdict in favor of a former state employee of the Missouri House of Representatives early Saturday morning in a civil lawsuit for disability discrimination and unlawful retaliation.

The employee was fired in 2017 after he requested workplace accommodations related to his disability and reported discriminatory treatment. In a meeting, the former Chief Clerk of the House, D. Adam Crumbliss, became upset when the employee stated he would contact the Missouri Commission on Human Rights and fired him just minutes later. The discrimination and retaliatory discharge was in violation of both the Missouri Human Rights Act and the House of Representatives’ policies.

The employee was represented by Cyrus Dashtaki and L.E. Beck of Dashtaki Law Firm, LLC and Nimrod Chapel of Jefferson City’s Chapel Law Group. Calling the verdict a victory for employees with disabilities, Cyrus Dashtaki said “I’m proud that such a fine jury sent a clear message to the State that Missourians will hold the legislature accountable and discrimination will not be tolerated.”
